PETER EDWARD FLISOCK: A LIFE OF ADVENTURE, EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP
Peter Edward Flisock, a remarkable educator and adventurer, left an indelible mark on the world of education and the Alaskan wilderness. Born on November 16, 1941, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, Flisock's journey took him from the familiar surroundings of his hometown to the rugged landscapes of Alaska, where he would spend much of his life. After graduating from Owen J. Roberts High School in 1959, Flisock pursued higher education with passion. He earned his bachelor's degree from West Chester State College in 1963 and later completed his master's at Temple University in 1969. During this time, he honed his skills as a mathematics and physics teacher at Schwenksville Union High School.
In 1969, Flisock's life took an unexpected turn when he accepted a teaching position with the newly formed Alaska State Operated School System in Nulato. This decision would shape the course of his personal and professional life for decades to come. It was in Alaska that Flisock met his "Indian princess," Olinga Marie Stickman. Their 51-year love story resulted in two sons, Peter Luke and Andrew John, who now reside in Pennsylvania. Flisock's career in education quickly evolved from teaching to administration. In 1973, he became a principal at Galena Airforce Base, and the following year, he played a crucial role in organizing one of Alaska's first rural city school districts since the 1920s. His administrative prowess led him to become the Superintendent of Galena City School District and later the Southwest Region School District. During his tenure, Flisock oversaw the construction of eight new schools, demonstrating his commitment to improving educational infrastructure in remote Alaskan communities. Flisock's final administrative role was as principal in Noatak, where he put his leadership philosophy into practice. Under his guidance, Noatak students achieved remarkable success, winning the Alaska State Battle of the Books and a state class AA men's Basketball Championship.
At the age of 46, Flisock retired from his educational career but not from life's adventures. He returned to the Mansfield area, where he continued to pursue his passions for outdoor activities and storytelling. Throughout his life, Flisock embraced the wilderness with open arms. From hiking the Grand Canyon to canoeing through Algonquin Park, his adventurous spirit knew no bounds. In Alaska, he became a skilled hunter, trapper, and fisherman, navigating the challenging terrain of the Yukon River and its surrounding areas.
Flisock's tales of survival and triumph in the Alaskan wilderness captivated listeners, painting vivid mental pictures of his exploits. His experiences included:
- Building boats and flying small planes
- Trapping on a 60-mile weekly route
- Hunting trophy moose in the Koyukuk river drainage
- Fishing in the renowned Wood-Tikchik drainage
Peters son’s recall everything they know about hunting and trapping we can say we learned from Dad, But mom taught us how to fish! Peter, affectionately known as the “Yukon Kid” turned to competitive long range shooting. Pairing his mathematical mind and love for physics, he became a very accomplished shooter and reloader. Known for his straightforward demeanor, Flisock was never one to mince words. His colorful language and no-nonsense attitude endeared him to many, earning him comparisons to his favorite U.S. President, Harry Truman. Peter Edward Flisock passed away on December 10, 2022, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of education, adventure, and community building. His life serves as an inspiration to educators, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who dares to chase their dreams, no matter how far they may lead.
As we remember this extraordinary individual, we're reminded of the impact one person can have on countless lives through dedication, passion, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. Peter Edward Flisock's story is a testament to the power of education, the beauty of the natural world, and the enduring spirit of adventure that resides in us all.
